Volunteer Work Dr. Kopf has worked with a great diversity of groups and individuals in age, professional level, culture, problems and experience. In each setting, he seeks to use and develop innovative, culturally-appropriate interventions that help individuals learn and change their behavior to be more in line with their goals. For the past four years, he has been an active leader on his churchs pastoral council leading retreats, workshops and organizing community-wide research programs. As a gubernatorially appointed member of the Diamond Head Area Mental Health Service Board, he advises the governor on community-wide mental-health issues. In the Hawaii Psychological Association, he serves on the legislative action committee working to sponsor bills that promote mental health and good psychology in Hawaii. Also through his work in this organization, he organized a state-wide disaster response to the attacks that occurred September 11th. As a volunteer and founding member of the Hawaii Facilitators Network, he works with the local YMCA to promote the use of challenge courses and experiential education to benefit children, teens and adults. Dr. Kopf also works as a volunteer with several Boys and Girls Clubs across Oahu helping staff and kids develop the skills they need to succeed. Personal History Dr. Kopfs interest in assisting others began early in his life with his involvement in the Boy Scouts, who honored him with the rank of Eagle Scout. After doing many hours of service in this and other organizations, he attended college at Texas A&M University and became an active leader in Alpha Phi Omega, a national service-based organization that provided over 50,000 hours of service each year to the local community. It was also during this time that he helped guide other students as a Resident Assistant in the universitys resident halls. To enhance his ability to assist others, in 1997 he earned his doctorate in Counseling Psychology- a field dedicated to improving and enhancing the strengths and talents of people. While in graduate school at Texas Tech University, he continued helping people develop themselves through his work as a counselor at the university counseling center, as a director of two university resident halls, as a leader of professional workshops and retreats, and as a facilitator on the universitys outdoor challenge course. He then completed his studies with an internship at the University of Hawaii Counseling Center. After completing his internship, Dr. Kopf remained in Hawaii and worked as the director of Chaminades Universitys Counseling Center. During this time, in addition to his work with students, faculty and staff, he founded a number of innovative experiential learning programs that focused on helping students learn to cope with lifes difficulties. |
